Shrî Râmakrishna (1836-1886) is unanimously considered to be one of the greatest Indian masters of all time; some see him as an avatar of Vishnu. Initially devoted to Kali, he was initiated into all branches of Indian religion and even made inroads into Christianity and Islam, conforming to the rituals and beliefs of each. "All roads lead to God, but all roads are not God," he used to say, a message that goes beyond tolerance, affirming the full legitimacy of all major religious traditions. Gandhi said of him: "His life enables us to see God face to face. The present collection, which has been enlarged in the course of its reprints, is today the reference text on the thought of this master.
