In this volume, the greatest sacred text of Hinduism, The Bhagavad-Gîtâ, is presented to us by the great Shrî Aurobindo.
The Gîtâ is considered by Hindus of all sects and castes to contain in its seven hundred verses the totality of the vision accumulated by sages over many millennia. Powerful Western thinkers have not hesitated to proclaim it "the greatest book that has come out of the hand of man". More than a hundred translations have been published. And even today, as for more than twenty centuries, no reformer, no innovator in India can be listened to unless he can plausibly demonstrate that his doctrines conform to an interpretation of the Gîtâ.
The fact that Shrî Aurobindo was brought up in the West, and was nourished by Greek, Latin, French, German, Italian and English authors, even before he knew those of his own country, gave him the rare privilege of being able to express Hindu wisdom in terms and modes of thought that are accessible to us.
